It All Begins with a Story…

“We keep sane by telling stories… Stories tell us who we are, tell us what we can do.” - Pastor Eugene Peterson

I love classical and romantic story ballets, also known as narrative ballets, that tell a story through dance and music. There is a reason that ballets such as Swan Lake, Giselle, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and Sleeping Beauty have continued to be well-loved year after year by audiences worldwide. Often based on folk and fairy tales, myths, poetry, and other literature, these ballets also feature rich musical scores, elaborate sets and exquisite costumes, and inspire audiences of all ages with their beauty, passion, and artistry.

A ballet dancer isn't just a body; a dancer is a storyteller. Every port de bras, every tilt of the head, every gaze of the eyes becomes a word or a phrase in a silent language. Dancers embody both their role and the music, weaving tales of love, forgiveness, loss, or triumph through carefully crafted and lovingly executed choreography. A dancer's leaps can express boundless joy, while a hunched posture portrays crushing despair. A ballet dancer paints a vivid picture with their very being, leaving the audience to be swept away by the story unfolding before them.

Because we love and are inspired by classical story ballets, we will be exploring some of these ages-old ballets throughout the year at our Embody Ballet studio, beginning with Cinderella in the fall, followed by The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake. These stories convey a rich tapestry of themes and emotions through movement, music, and visual elements. Here's a breakdown of some key aspects they express:

  • Universal Themes: Love, loss, betrayal, good vs. evil, forgiveness, redemption, courage, and the triumph of the human spirit are all common themes explored in these ballets. They resonate with audiences across cultures and languages because they tap into fundamental human experiences.

  • Emotional Depth: Through expressive dancing and dramatic storytelling, these ballets evoke a wide range of emotions. From the joy of love in "Swan Lake" to the despair of heartbreak in "Giselle," dancers use their bodies to convey a character's inner world.

  • Fantasy and Enchantment: Many classical story ballets are based on fairy tales and myths, allowing audiences to escape into a world of magic and wonder. The elaborate sets, costumes, and fantastical creatures transport viewers to another reality.

  • Technical Brilliance: The technical skill of the dancers is a major element that conveys the story. The athleticism and artistry of the performers leave audiences in awe, further enhancing the narrative unfolding on stage.

  • Cultural Legacy: These classical story ballets have been passed down through generations, preserving cultural stories and traditions. They offer a glimpse into the artistic values and storytelling methods of the past.

In essence, classical story ballets offer a unique combination of entertainment, emotional connection, and artistic expression. They use a non-verbal language to tell timeless stories that resonate with audiences of all ages.

We look forward to exploring and embodying these story ballets together, and to bringing our love for our art and our audience into our performances throughout the year!
